Retrofit designer

All retrofit improvement measures that have to comply with PAS 2035 must be subject to a retrofit design that specifies the performance characteristics of the materials and, or systems to be installed together with clear instructions regarding how they should be installed, including the provision of annotated scale drawings where necessary to confirm specific details. This is to ensure that the retrofit will achieve the intended outcomes provided that the installer fully complies with the details of the design.

  • Section 9 of PAS 2035 lists all the requirements of a retrofit design. Key aspects of these include:

    • Information to be taken into account – this includes the intended outcomes, the information in the retrofit assessment report(s), and any planning conditions or applicable Building Regulations.

    • Compatibility of materials and systems – this is fundamental to a whole house approach and requires all measures to work with the building and with each other. Construction details should be provided to show how all connections are made at corners, junctions, and edges to ensure continuity of both insulation and airtightness barriers.

    • Provisions for the management of moisture – this applies to moisture within the dwelling and within the building fabric and requires attention whether moisture open materials should be specified as well as to airtightness and ventilation and resilience to rainwater ingress and flooding.

    • Measures to reduce the risk of summer overheating

    • Procedures to be followed by the installer – these may include specific sequencing of work, reference to technical standards, and requirements for testing, commissioning, and handover.

Our Retrofit Designers are MRICS/MCIOB approved and also approved members of the CIOB Conservation Scheme. They use the assessments to design relevant energy efficiency improvements to a dwelling using their knowledge and experience of the best retrofit measures appropriate for each dwelling. We cover designs for all Risk Paths and also for those buildings that are in Conservation Areas or Listed.
